On the world stage, NATO leaders will gather for a pivotal annual summit and the FIFA World Cup’s Round 16 comes to a close. Stateside, a key preliminary hearing is beginning for the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk and a new sexual assault allegation has emerged against Graham Platner, Maine’s controversial Democratic Senate nominee. Meanwhile, Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom – and questions over whether his wife and children will join him – are generating headlines across the pond.

Here are five stories worth following:

Quote Driving the News:

“Except for the fact that (the 2026 NATO Summit) was being held in Turkey by President Erdogan, I don’t think I would have gone to it,” President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House last week.

Trump Heads to Turkey for NATO Summit

What we’re watching: Leaders from NATO’s 32 member nations are convening for the opening of the 2026 NATO Summit in the Turkish capital of Ankara, where they are expected to review last year’s commitments and adopt new goals for the alliance. President Donald Trump will push leaders to increase their countries’ defense spending, while military support for Ukraine and the conflict in Iran will likely also come up.

Why it matters: The summit is also a key test of Trump’s influence over the future of NATO, as allies seek clarity on whether his administration will maintain traditional U.S. commitments to collective defense while pushing countries to spend more on their own militaries. With Trump repeatedly criticizing NATO allies over defense spending and questioning aspects of U.S. support for Ukraine, the decisions made this week could shape the alliance’s strategy on Russia, China and global security for years to come.

Key Hearing Continues in Charlie Kirk Case

What we’re watching: A weeklong preliminary hearing is underway in Utah for Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University last September. Prosecutors are presenting evidence to convince Judge Tony Graf there is enough evidence to send the case to trial. The hearing will also help determine whether prosecutors can pursue the death penalty.

Why it matters: The hearing marks the first major public presentation of evidence in one of the country’s highest-profile political violence cases and will determine whether Robinson stands trial on aggravated murder charges. The case has drawn national attention because of Kirk’s large fanbase and prominence in conservative politics. It’s expected to renew debate over political extremism, campus security and the use of the death penalty.

Team USA Defeated as World Cup Round of 16 Wraps Up

What we’re watching: The FIFA World Cup round of 16 concludes today with two matches that will finalize the eight teams that will advance to the quarterfinals, as Argentina takes on Egypt, followed by Switzerland against Colombia. The U.S. men’s team – one of three host nations – won’tadvance after losing to Belgium last night in Seattle.

Why it matters: The close of round 16 marks a turning point in the World Cup, with each remaining team considered a contender to win the tournament. The expanded 48-team tournament has produced several surprise contenders alongside traditional soccer powers, including the U.S. team has drawn strong attendance and widespread enthusiasm as a co-host nation. The tournament has also become embroiled in controversy after President Trump acknowledged asking FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s red-card suspension, a move that fueled accusations of political interference and prompted European soccer officials to question the integrity of FIFA’s disciplinary process.

Prince Harry Returns to U.K. Amid Security Dispute

What we’re watching: Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom this week for charity events has sparked renewed attention aimed at the British royal family. The British public will be watching to see whether Harry’s wife Meghan and their children will accompany him after the couple moved to the U.S. and officially stepped back from their royal roles in 2020. King Charles III isn’t expected to meet with Harry during the trip, underscoring the continuing strains within the royal family.

Why it matters: The visit renews attention on Harry’s long-running dispute with the British government over the decision to strip him of taxpayer-funded police protection and security after he and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020. Harry has argued the lack of government-funded security makes it unsafe for Meghan and their children to visit the U.K., making the issue a major point of tension in both his legal battles and his fractured relationship with the royal family.

Sexual Assault Allegation Jolts Maine Senate Race

What we’re watching: Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner is facing a new sexual assault allegation amid his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old Maine resident, alleges Platner sexually assaulted her during a relationship nearly five years ago, according to a report published Monday. Platner said the encounter was consensual and called the allegation false and politically motivated. The accusation comes after Platner weathered scrutiny over past online posts and other controversies, and will inject fresh uncertainty into one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races.

Why it matters: The allegation comes at a critical moment for Platner’s campaign, arriving just one week before Maine’s deadline for a candidate to withdraw and allow the state Democratic Party to name a replacement on the November ballot. Platner has denied the accusation, however, Maine’s Democratic Party and other high-profile Democrats have called for Platner to withdraw his candidacy in light of the allegations.
