Many notable races have already been set, including in some battleground states like Michigan.
But some of the most closely watched primary elections will be in the coming days and weeks as Democrats aim to flip four seats to take control of the Senate.
Here are the upcoming primary elections to watch:
Minnesota House District 2: Aug. 11
Incumbent Democratic Rep. Angie Craig is running for U.S. Senate rather than seeking reelection, leaving voters with six Democratic candidates to pick from for the Democratic primary in the district that is the most evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats in the state.
Minnesota Senate: Aug. 11
Craig and Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan are competing to replace retiring Sen. Tina Smith. Craig has the support of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Nancy Pelosi, while Flanagan has the backing of Smith as well as progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Wisconsin House District 7: Aug. 11
Five Republicans and three Democrats are vying for the House seat in the deep red district in northern Wisconsin.
President Donald Trump endorsed one of the Republicans, 26-year-old Michael Alfonso, who is married to the daughter of U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
Wisconsin Governor: Aug. 11
This race will be one of the most closely watched on Tuesday as Democrats seek to replace retiring Gov. Tony Evers (D). Four candidates seek the Democratic spot to face off against the presumptive Republican nominee Tom Tiffany, including the insurgent state Rep. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist who has called for free healthcare and a moratorium on AI data center construction.
Alaska Senate: Aug. 18
Former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat who lost reelection in 2024, is likely to win the Democratic primary and face Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan in what will likely be a competitive general election.

Florida House District 19: Aug. 18
A crowded Republican primary without any Trump endorsements will be closely watched.
The winner of the 10-way Republican contest is likely to win the general election, as a Democrat has not won the seat since its lines were redrawn in 2012.
Florida Governor: Aug. 18
The field is crowded with potential picks to replace incumbent Gov. Ron DeSantis, who cannot seek a third-consecutive term.
Though 11 Republicans, six Democrats and many others are running for the spot, only Republicans have been elected as Florida governor since 1998.
Wyoming Governor: Aug. 18
The governor race will be interesting to watch as Trump has thrown his support behind Megan Degenfelder, Wyoming’s superintendent of public instruction, but the Wyoming Republican Party backed Col. Brent Bien in July.
Massachusetts Senate: Sept. 1
Incumbent Sen. Ed Markey, a Democrat, has a strong primary challenger in Rep. Seth Moulton. Markey and other incumbents across the country have been outraised by challengers in tough races.
New Hampshire Senate: Sept. 8
A seat that Democrats held for nearly two decades is open due to Sen. Jeanne Shaheen’s retirement. Democrats have consolidated behind Rep. Chris Pappas, while John Sununu, who held the Senate seat before losing to Shaheen in 2008, has the benefit of strong statewide name recognition on the Republican side.
