Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study shows there were 746,000 deaths by suicide worldwide in 2021. Suicide was the third-leading cause of death among young people ages 15 through 29 according to the World Health Organization.

The most recent estimates available from the WHO show that 73% of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Four of the 10 countries with the highest rates are located in Africa, including Lesotho, which has topped the list since 2018.

The global rate of suicide has dropped by 35% since 2000, the WHO reported. While most regions saw a similar downward trend, the Americas experienced a 17% increase over the same period.

The WHO reports that the recent global median of government health expenditures devoted to mental health was 2.1%. The agency’s data also indicate that several of the countries with the highest suicide rates in 2021 are home to well below the global median number of 13 mental health workers per 100,000 population.

These are the 10 countries with the highest suicide rates in 2021, according to WHO estimates. Figures have been age-adjusted to account for differences among countries’ population profiles.
