Mexico Backs Extending USMCA Trade Pact for 16 Years

MEXICO CITY, June ⁠2 (Reuters) – ⁠Mexico’s government ⁠has reiterated its support ​to extend the U.S.-Mexico ‌Canada (USMCA) trade agreement ‌for 16 ⁠years, ⁠Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday, ​as talks are underway to renew the ​regional free trade pact.

“Mexico’s intention ⁠and position ⁠is that ⁠the ​treaty should be extended,” Ebrard said. “Keep ​in ⁠mind that the treaty will remain in effect for many ⁠more years, but we would like it ⁠to be extended to 16 years.”

Mexico and the U.S. have engaged in bilateral talks to extend the treaty, but negotiations with ⁠Canada have lagged behind.
