BRASILIA, Aug 31 (Reuters) – Brazilian and U.S. officials spoke virtually on Monday to discuss tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, and agreed to hold further meetings at a later date, Brazil’s industry and trade ministry said in a statement.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Industry and Trade Minister Marcio Elias Rosa held a virtual meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the ministry said.
• The parties agreed to meet again at the ministerial level to review the progress achieved during technical meetings that are set to be held in the coming weeks, it added
• “It was a meeting to resume dialogue. Obviously, we didn’t make any progress on any of the negotiating points,” Rosa told journalists
• In July, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on imports of Brazilian products, alleging unfair trade practices

• A few days later, the U.S. also imposed a 12.5% tariff on imports from Brazil as part of a broad measure targeting dozens of nations linked to allegations of lax enforcement of forced labor bans.
• Brazilian authorities reiterated to Greer that they do not agree with the measures taken by the U.S., calling them not compatible with multilateral trade rules, the ministry said
• Monday’s talks came after Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the tariffs during a phone call earlier this month
