Sci-Fi No Longer: U.S. Confirms It Has Weapons in Space

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA - JANUARY 17: NASA's Artemis II is rolled from the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on January 17, 2026 in Cape Canaveral, Florida. NASA’s integrated SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft for the Artemis II mission are being rolled to Launch Pad 39B ahead of the 10-day mission in February 2026, which will take the crew around the Moon and back to Earth. It could be a plot point from a James Bond movie. Or another James Bond movie. Or a third Ja… you get the point. As headlines blared that artificial intelligence just might wipe out humanity in the next 10 years, the Pentagon confirmed this week for the first time that the U.S. has weapons in orbit.

The underlying fact isn’t a huge surprise. Space has been a metaphorical battleground for decades, with great powers competing to deploy satellites for communications, GPS and intelligence gathering.

An earth-shaking revelation this is not. Of course the U.S. has weapons in space. In early 2025, the Space Force even published a blueprint – “Space Warfighting: A Framework for Planners” – that addressed the need for “capabilities for offensive and defensive purposes.”

But the disclosure is interesting: For years, it was taboo to acknowledge – much less boast about – having weapons in space.

There’s a message here, both to space-capable allies like France and rivals like China or Russia. Beijing and Moscow may now be under pressure to acknowledge the extent of their own military presence in space.

What Meink Said

The news came not via anonymous senior officials but in a speech by Air Force Secretary Troy Meink to the 2026 Air, Space & Cyber Conference.

“We are increasing readiness against existing threats,” Meink said, according to an official Air Force account of his remarks. “And the United States has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action.”

What kinds of “space control” weapons? (Kinetic? Electromagnetic? Directed energy?) How many? When were they deployed? Will there be more? He did not say.

The “Space Warfighting” document says military operations in space “may involve seeking out and destroying an enemy’s spacecraft, systems and networks through measures designed to minimize the effectiveness of those systems, or countering enemy efforts in the other warfighting domains (land, maritime, air and cyberspace).”

One challenge: getting beyond traditional anti-satellite weapons that pulverize their targets but create a high-velocity spray of debris that can disable other satellites in orbit.

In late 2024, departing Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall told The New York Times about efforts to deploy what he called “low-debris-causing weapons.” They were expected to come online in 2026.

Is This About China?

OK, so the “what” is a bit unclear. How about the “who”?

The timing of the remarks is interesting, coming shortly before President Donald Trump is expected to host Chinese leader Xi Jinping for a summit that was already going to be tense because of disputes over trade and the war with Iran.

Last year, a senior Space Force official said China has been fine-tuning tactics in low Earth orbit that amount to “dogfighting in space.”

Earlier this year, U.S. officials detailed Russian efforts to stalk American satellites and potentially take them out with projectiles.

Those developments and Meink’s comments highlight what strategists have long known: Space isn’t just a metaphorical information-gathering and communications battlefield, but a literal one.

And one way to keep the peace is deterrence, which relies on capability and the credible threat of using it. By announcing the U.S. has capability but keeping the specifics classified, the Space Force may be hoping it never has to follow through.
