{"id":97,"date":"2026-05-28T09:39:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T09:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=97"},"modified":"2026-05-28T09:39:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T09:39:35","slug":"boeing-ceo-says-200-jet-china-deal-an-initial-tranche-with-more-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=97","title":{"rendered":"Boeing CEO Says 200-Jet China Deal an &#8216;Initial Tranche&#8217; With More to Come"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Julie Zhu and Anne Marie Roantree<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>HONG KONG, May 28 (Reuters) &#8211; China&#8217;s commitment \u2060to \u2060buy 200 Boeing jets during a recent \u2060visit by U.S. President Donald Trump will be firmed up later this year and is only \u200ban &#8220;initial tranche&#8221; of a potentially far bigger deal, the planemaker&#8217;s CEO Kelly Ortberg said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=95\">Trump Administration in Talks to Fund US Drone Companies, WSJ Reports<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Investors had expressed disappointment over the size of the deal, which \u200cwas much smaller than a roughly 500-plane \u200cpackage that sources told Reuters was under discussion ahead of a meeting between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping this month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But at a \u2060U.S. conference on \u2060Wednesday, Ortberg said his trip to China alongside Trump had been &#8220;super successful&#8221; and reopened the \u200bmarket to Boeing&#8217;s narrowbody planes for the first time in nearly a decade after an effective order freeze due to trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good start. And I&#8217;m very confident that keeping that market open, that&#8217;s an initial tranche of aircraft, and there will be more to \u200bcome,&#8221; Ortberg said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The 200-jet commitment is an entirely new deal and does not include previously unannounced orders, according to a source \u2060familiar \u2060with the matter, who added delivery \u2060schedules had yet to \u200bbe confirmed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The jets are expected to be distributed primarily among China&#8217;s big three state-owned carriers, Air China, China Eastern Airlines \u200band China Southern Airlines, the source added \u2060on condition of anonymity because the information has yet to be made public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Boeing declined to comment beyond Ortberg&#8217;s remarks. China&#8217;s commerce ministry and the state-owned airlines did not respond immediately to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Ortberg said once the Chinese government commits to a batch of narrowbody aircraft, it allocates them to individual airlines, after which Boeing negotiates firm orders on an airline-by-airline basis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The initial commitment of 200 will turn into an \u2060order later on in the year,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I never had a plan to go to China and return \u2060with a packet full of 500 orders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=93\">Construction of Cage-Fighting Arena Transforms White House Grounds<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>COMMITMENTS IN STAGES<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump said after his visit to China that the Boeing purchases could rise to as many as 750 planes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>China intends to buy several hundred more Boeing jets but will not announce the full order at once, opting instead to release commitments in stages, the source said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>China could later commit to purchasing a further 300 to 500 jets, potentially bringing the total to as many as 700 planes, the source said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But that would be contingent on Boeing fulfilling its obligation to supply critical spare parts for jets already in service with Chinese airlines, which have struggled to secure components amid trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, the source added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>China&#8217;s commerce ministry confirmed the \u2060200-jet deal last week, though it did not elaborate on the types of planes.
