Jean Carroll, the writer who accused U.S. President \u200bDonald Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s, a source familiar with the matter said \u200con Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=85\">Trump Says US Not Satisfied Yet on Deal With Iran<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The probe is focused \u200con whether Carroll committed perjury in testimony tied to two civil lawsuits \u2060that she \u2060won against Trump &#8211; one tied to her allegations that he sexually \u200babused her in a New York department store and another over defamation in 2019, said the source, who requested anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>CNN first reported the development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The \u200blaunch of a probe, which is being led by the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office \u2060in Chicago, \u2060may not necessarily result \u2060in charges \u200bbeing brought against Carroll.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The department and Carroll&#8217;s lawyer Robbie Kaplan did not immediately \u200brespond to requests for \u2060comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Since last year, Trump&#8217;s Justice Department has pursued a slew of investigations against the president&#8217;s antagonists\u00a0and has brought criminal charges in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=83\">Polls and Protests Show Americans Are Turning on Data Centers<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The source said the prosecutors&#8217; move is based on a 2022 deposition statement by the former Elle magazine columnist \u2060that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit. Her lawyers later revealed \u2060that Reid Hoffman, the billionaire co-founder of LinkedIn, had paid some of her legal bills.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A jury found in May 2023 that Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll, and defamed her by lying, but did not rape her.
