{"id":865,"date":"2026-07-29T04:15:54","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T04:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=865"},"modified":"2026-07-29T04:15:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T04:15:54","slug":"californias-largest-ice-facility-did-not-provide-adequate-medical-care-monitor-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=865","title":{"rendered":"California&#8217;s Largest ICE Facility Did Not Provide Adequate Medical Care, Monitor Says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Kanishka Singh<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) &#8211; A court-appointed monitor has \u2060found \u2060that California&#8217;s largest immigration detention facility \u2060did not provide adequate medical care to detainees and violated an earlier \u200bcourt order to do so, according to a filing.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=863\">Trump Says He Does Not Care About USMCA as US, Canada Plan Trade Talks<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Based on the review, the facility lacks a reliable system \u200cto consistently provide adequate health care, \u200cplacing individuals at serious risk of both immediate and long-term harm,&#8221; the monitor, Dr Muthusamy Anandkumar, said \u2060about the \u2060California City detention facility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The report was based on a three-day site inspection, interviews \u200bwith over a dozen staff and 40 patients, and reviews of 141 patient medical records and thousands of pages of documents produced by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and CoreCivic, the private prison company operating the \u200bfacility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union said the report marked the first time a court-appointed neutral party \u2060has investigated \u2060the full scope of \u2060the delivery of \u200bmedical care at an ICE detention center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A federal judge ordered the inquiry earlier this year and \u200bset out eight components of \u2060a functional healthcare system including adequate healthcare staffing, timely and responsive emergency services and timely access to prescribed medications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The detention facility was out of compliance with all eight of those areas, the report from Anandkumar said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=861\">US Backs Madagascar Rare Earths Project in Push to Loosen China\u2019s Supply Chain Grip<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Department of Homeland Security, of which ICE is a part, said after the report that no ICE \u2060detainees are denied access to medical care and that ICE &#8220;is regularly audited and inspected \u2060by external agencies to ensure that all ICE facilities comply with performance-based national detention standards.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The DHS said ICE provided medical care, including access to medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a statement cited by media, a CoreCivic spokesperson said the company was reviewing the monitor&#8217;s report and that &#8220;nothing matters more to CoreCivic than the health, safety and well-being of the people in our care.&#8221; The spokesperson also said that an on-site ICE officer was responsible for &#8220;monitoring compliance with applicable ICE detention standards and policies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>ICE has been the face of President Donald \u2060Trump&#8217;s immigration crackdown, which human rights advocates say has violated free-speech and due-process rights and has created an unsafe environment, especially for ethnic minorities, who have raised concerns about racial profiling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump says his actions are aimed at improving domestic security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>About 50 people have died in ICE \u200bcustody around the country since Trump took office in January last year.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=859\">Border Battle: When Wiping Your Own Phone Is a Crime<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>(Reporting by \u200bKanishka Singh in Washington; Editing by Matthew Lewis)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News is a recognized leader in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings.
