BRUSSELS, July 24 (Reuters) – The European Commission \u2060gave \u2060a guarded welcome to new \u2060tariffs imposed by the United States on Friday, \u200bsaying that the outcome was in line with a trade deal the two \u200csides struck a year ago.<\/p>\n

The \u200cUnited States on Friday imposed new tariffs of 10% and \u206012.5% on \u2060goods from 60 trading partners, including the EU and China, \u200bsaying it had found they were not acting sufficiently to prevent the import of products made from forced labor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The European Union is one of a \u200blimited number of U.S. trading partners for which the new tariffs do \u2060not \u2060stack on top of \u2060pre-existing “most \u200bfavored nation” customs duties. The tariffs also reintroduce the additional tariff exemptions for \u200bthe EU, such \u2060as cork and diamonds, on top of those on aircraft\u00a0and parts, generic medicines, and active ingredients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“The EU notes positively the fact that this outcome is in line with the U.S. tariff commitments agreed under the \u2060EU-US Joint Statement,” a European Commission spokesperson said, adding it provided “positive \u2060momentum” to continue the work on exploring further tariff exemptions and deepening cooperation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The spokesperson said the EU expected Washington to continue abiding by the terms of the deal struck at U.S. President Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland last July.<\/p>\n

Under that deal, the EU agreed to remove import duties on U.S. industrial goods, while the U.S. imposed 15% tariffs on most EU \u2060products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“This is essential to continue providing our respective markets with much-needed stability and predictability,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The EU has previously rejected U.S. allegations that it is not acting against forced labour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
