{"id":794,"date":"2026-07-24T06:41:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T06:41:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=794"},"modified":"2026-07-24T06:41:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T06:41:20","slug":"eus-kallas-questions-us-rationale-for-tariffs-on-bloc-seeks-clarification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=794","title":{"rendered":"EU&#8217;s Kallas Questions US Rationale for Tariffs on Bloc, Seeks Clarification"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Karen Lema<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>MANILA, July 24 (Reuters) &#8211; European Union foreign policy chief \u2060Kaja \u2060Kallas questioned Washington&#8217;s rationale for imposing new \u2060tariffs on European goods, saying on Friday that allegations of shortcomings in the bloc&#8217;s \u200bforced labour controls were unfounded.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=792\">Brazil Says US Tariffs Related to Forced Labor Are \u2018Arbitrary\u2019 and \u2018Unjustified\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t say that for the European Union,&#8221; Kallas told Reuters on the sidelines of ASEAN meetings \u200cin Manila.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;If you compare our labour \u200claws to the ones of the United States, I mean, we have paid vacations, we have very good labour conditions \u2060for our \u2060employees, so it&#8217;s not really grounded,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>On Friday, the Trump administration imposed new \u200btariffs of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners, including the European Union, over allegations of lax enforcement of forced labour bans, just as a temporary 10% global tariff expires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Asked whether the EU had expected to be included in the U.S. \u200baction, Kallas replied: &#8220;Who can keep track of the tariffs going on and off? No, we were not expecting \u2060this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The tariffs \u2060are the latest effort to \u2060restore President Donald \u200bTrump&#8217;s campaign vision of a near-global tariff after the U.S. Supreme Court earlier this year struck down the &#8220;reciprocal&#8221; \u200btariffs he imposed under emergency powers \u2060in a bid to shrink the U.S. trade deficit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Kallas said the EU will seek clarification from Washington, adding that the bloc had honoured commitments under a transatlantic trade agreement reached last year and viewed the new tariffs as a shock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;We had a deal with America and we have kept to that deal, that side of the deal,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s why \u2060this is a negative surprise that this agreement is not kept.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=790\">Seaplane Crashes in Washington State, All 11 People on Board Accounted For<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Separately, Kallas said the European Union&#8217;s \u2060latest sanctions package against Russia was aimed at putting more pressure on Moscow and limiting its ability to finance the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;It is to deprive them of the financing of this war,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Kallas said sanctions were having an effect on Russia&#8217;s economy and have made it harder for Moscow to raise capital abroad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;We also see that due to the sanctions, they can&#8217;t raise capital outside,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It is clear that if we put this in place, it has an effect together with other elements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The European Union approved its 21st sanctions package against Russia over its war in Ukraine, imposing curbs on the country&#8217;s \u2060banking sector and cryptocurrency networks, the Council of the EU said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Kallas said sanctions were only one element of a broader European strategy to pressure Russia into serious negotiations with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;We have different elements of this approach.
