BRASILIA\/SAO PAULO, July 23 (Reuters) – The \u2060Brazilian \u2060government on Thursday rejected \u2060the tariffs imposed by the United States \u200bon the South American nation and another 59 trading \u200cpartners related to forced \u200clabor, calling the move “arbitrary” and “unjustified.”<\/p>\n

“Lacking a legal basis \u2060under \u2060domestic law to support its protectionist trade policy, the \u200bU.S. Trade Representative chose to manipulate an issue of great importance to human rights and workers’ rights movement,” Brazil’s \u200bgovernment said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The country’s exports to the \u2060U.S. will \u2060be levied at \u206012.5% \u200bunder the measure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Brazil added it will immediately start procedures to \u200btrigger the response \u2060instruments under its “Reciprocity Law” and will take the matter to the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement mechanism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The tariffs on dozens of markets, imposed by the U.S. \u2060over allegations of lax enforcement of forced labor bans, will \u2060take effect on Friday.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Trump administration imposed a separate 25% tariff on several Brazilian goods, attributing the levies to unfair trade practices, in a move that specifically targeted the South American country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he was open to negotiations with the \u2060U.S., but noted that the country would seek other markets if unable to sell its products there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
