{"id":787,"date":"2026-07-23T23:11:40","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T23:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=787"},"modified":"2026-07-23T23:11:40","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T23:11:40","slug":"trump-to-impose-forced-labor-duties-on-friday-as-temporary-10-us-tariffs-expire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=787","title":{"rendered":"Trump to Impose Forced Labor Duties on Friday as Temporary 10% US Tariffs Expire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By David Lawder<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>July 23 (Reuters) &#8211; The Trump administration on Friday will \u2060impose \u2060new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% \u2060on 60 trading partners, including the European Union, over allegations of lax enforcement \u200bof forced labor bans, just as a temporary 10% global tariff expires, senior administration officials said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=785\">Paramount-Warner Bros Deal Paused Through August 17, Judge Rules<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The move is \u200cthe White House&#8217;s latest effort to \u200crestore President Donald Trump&#8217;s campaign vision of a near-global tariff after the U.S. Supreme Court in February struck \u2060down his &#8220;reciprocal&#8221; \u2060duties of 10% to 50% imposed last year under a national emergencies law \u200bto try to shrink the U.S. trade deficit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump responded to that ruling by imposing a temporary 10% tariff for 150 days that expires at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Friday (0401 GMT), invoking Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, a law \u200bmeant to quell balance of payments crises. The new duties will take effect at that exact same \u2060moment, \u2060with goods in transit exempted \u2060until 12:01 a.m. \u200bEDT on July 28.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A senior Trump administration official disputed suggestions that the forced labor tariffs &#8212; invoked under \u200bthe 1974 law&#8217;s Section 301 &#8212; were \u2060simply a direct replacement for the expiring levies despite the timing, similar duty rates and vast coverage of nearly all U.S. imports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The official said the U.S. has stronger import bans on goods made with forced labor and enforces them more rigidly than any other country, giving rivals an unfair trading advantage over the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Both Democrats and \u2060Republicans in Congress have been calling for the\u00a0eradication of forced labor from global supply chains, &#8220;so we&#8217;re \u2060really responding to that call.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=783\">US Agency Drops Bid to Force Penn to Provide Names in Antisemitism Probe<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The official added that Trump would &#8220;always use the tools at his disposal to achieve his trade policy objectives, and that includes tariffs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The administration official said that many goods will be exempted from the duties, including oil and gas, fertilizer, certain foodstuffs and goods that are already subject to Section 232 national security tariffs, such as autos, steel, aluminum and copper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Other goods that comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade will also be exempted because of the highly integrated North American supply chain and high levels of U.S. content in the goods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The final Section \u2060301 unfair trade practices tariffs largely track the forced labor duties proposed on June 1.
