{"id":715,"date":"2026-07-22T04:43:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T04:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=715"},"modified":"2026-07-22T04:43:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T04:43:15","slug":"illinois-man-sentenced-for-hacking-snapchat-accounts-to-steal-nude-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=715","title":{"rendered":"Illinois Man Sentenced for Hacking Snapchat Accounts to Steal Nude Photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Nate Raymond<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>July 21 (Reuters) &#8211; An Illinois man was sentenced \u2060on \u2060Tuesday to more than six \u2060years in prison after admitting he hacked the Snapchat accounts of hundreds \u200bof women in order to steal any nude or semi-nude photos they had, which he then kept, \u200csold or traded on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=713\">US Tentatively Decides to Ban Imports of Some Military-Grade Drones<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Kyle \u200cSvara, 27, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston to 76 months \u2060in prison \u2060after pleading guilty to charges arising out of an earlier prosecution of \u200ba former Northeastern University track-and-field coach who paid him to hack the accounts of student athletes and other women.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The sentence was confirmed by a spokesperson for U.S. Attorney Leah Foley, whose office prosecuted Svara.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A lawyer for \u200bSvara did not respond to requests for comment.\u00a0His attorneys in court papers had said he \u2060has &#8220;profound \u2060remorse and shame for his \u2060actions,&#8221; which they \u200bsay took place during a period of isolation when he was a student at the \u200bUniversity of Illinois, at home \u2060during the COVID-19 lockdown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>According to prosecutors, Svara from May 2020 to February 2021 used anonymized, internet-based phone numbers to send text messages to more than 1,500 women posing as the support team for the Snap-operated social media platform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hundreds of people responded to Svara\u2019s phishing text messages with security codes \u2060that would allow him to access their Snapchat accounts, which he did in the \u2060cases of at least 517 women, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=711\">Union for United Airlines\u2019 Mechanics, Other Staff, Secures In-Principle Pact for New Contract<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That allowed him to download nude or semi-nude photos stored on the accounts of at least 59 women, prosecutors said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He not only kept photos for himself but also advertised his hacking services online, leading him to be paid $50 by former Northeastern University coach Steve Waithe to hack the accounts of women including those he had coached to steal content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Waithe was sentenced in 2024 to five years in prison for schemes to dupe young women into sending him nude photos \u2060or to steal such images from them.
