Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed last week that the U.S. will mint new golden commemorative coins for America\u2019s 250th anniversary featuring a portrait of President Donald Trump on one side.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Despite the coin\u2019s status as a commemorative collectible, it is still considered legal tender issued by the U.S. Mint.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But historians and politicians alike have pointed out legal issues with depicting Trump, a living politician, on currency typically reserved for the dead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Bessent said<\/u> in a social media post that the coin \u201ccelebrates the strength of American values.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Trump has long strived to put his name and likeness on documents and legal tender, from a proposed $250 bill<\/u> to commemorative passports<\/u>. The Treasury Department announced in March that Trump\u2019s signature would replace the U.S. Treasurer\u2019s signature on newly minted bills. What Is the Trump Coin?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Not to be confused with Trump\u2019s crypto-based meme coin, the gold-plated dollar coin featuring Trump\u2019s face is being minted as part of broader 250th anniversary celebrations. The Trump administration has been periodically floating design ideas for a U.S. coin featuring the president since last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The coin, which the Treasury says will be available for purchase in the fall, would become just the second piece of American currency in history to feature a living president on its face. Trump appeared to have little involvement with the conception or creation of the coin, telling<\/u> Fox News he was \u201chonored\u201d by the gesture and calling the design \u201ccute.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Is Trump\u2019s Coin Legal?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

There are currently no living Americans on U.S. legal currency \u2013 and there\u2019s a reason for that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After a legislative spoof<\/u> led to Treasury official Spencer Clark printing his own face on paper bills instead of famous explorer William Clark, an 1866 federal law prohibited the use of living subjects on paper currency. The Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005<\/u> established specifically that living presidents \u2013 or presidents dead for less than two years \u2013 could not appear on $1 coins.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean it hasn\u2019t happened. In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge appeared on a commemorative half-dollar sold at a Philadelphia exposition for America\u2019s 150th anniversary. The coin didn\u2019t appear to stir up much public demand; of the 1 million minted, over 850,000 were melted down<\/u> after the exposition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What Will Trump\u2019s Coin Look Like?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

The design for the 250th anniversary coin was approved by the Trump-appointed U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, giving the Treasury Department the power to mint it. Bessent has defended the design under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which established guidelines for creating coins \u201cemblematic of the U.S. semiquincentennial.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The coin\u2019s final design appeared to be a scaled-back version of earlier proposals for a 24-karat gold coin. One design<\/u> from October 2025 displayed a classic side profile of Trump, while the back showed him standing in front of an American flag with a raised fist, emblazoned with the words \u201cFIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another<\/u> design from earlier this year depicted Trump leaning against the Oval Office\u2019s Resolute desk. The Commission of Fine Arts urged that the coin be \u201cas large as possible.<\/u>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Why Are There No Living People on U.S. Currency?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Throughout history, the decision by living leaders to depict their own likeness on currency has often been associated with monarchies and imperial regimes, Alan Stahl, a retired curator of numismatics (the study of coins) from Princeton University, says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt would be interpreted as personal rule rather than rule on behalf of the people,\u201d Stahl said. \u201cIt would be interpreted as the rule of an individual and a sign of monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Beyond formal laws, the United States has historically rejected placing living figures on currency out of concern for democratic ideals. Stahl says the precedent dates back to George Washington\u2019s refusal to appear on coins during his presidency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWashington adamantly refused and said it would be a sign of tyranny if he allowed his image to go on the coins while he was president,\u201d Stahl said. \u201cNot only did his images not go on the coins \u2026 it wasn’t until 1909 when Lincoln’s image went on the penny that a human being ever went on U.S. coins.\u201d<\/p>\n
