{"id":641,"date":"2026-07-18T06:39:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-18T06:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=641"},"modified":"2026-07-18T06:39:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-18T06:39:48","slug":"trump-blames-canada-for-wildfire-smoke-says-he-will-add-cost-to-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=641","title":{"rendered":"Trump Blames Canada for Wildfire Smoke, Says He Will Add Cost to Tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By David Ljunggren and Wa Lone<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>OTTAWA, July 17 (Reuters) &#8211; President Donald Trump on Friday blamed \u2060Canada \u2060for wildfire smoke spreading across the\u00a0United States and \u2060said he would add the &#8220;incalculable cost&#8221;\u00a0of dealing with the pollution to existing tariffs on Canadian goods.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=639\">US Appeals Court Strikes Down New Jersey\u2019s Assault Weapons Ban on AR-15s<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Heavy smoke from \u200bhundreds of Canadian fires enveloped a swath\u00a0of the U.S. from the Midwest to the Northeast on Thursday and Friday, prompting warnings to residents to stay indoors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump, who has a \u200ccombative relationship with Prime Minister Mark Carney, said\u00a0he \u200cwould be calling the Canadian leader to find out what he planned to do about the &#8220;totally unacceptable&#8221; situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they \u2060are not properly maintaining \u2060their Forests &#8230; and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air,&#8221; \u200bhe said in a Truth Social post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;This is Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s minister of emergency management and community resilience, Eleanor Olszewski, said the government has invested C$12 billion ($8.56 billion) in forest sustainability and \u200bfire prevention since 2020 as the country faces increasingly drier, warmer weather.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>She also cited a long history of U.S.-Canadian partnership in fighting wildfires on \u2060both \u2060sides of their border.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;At this time, \u2060our first priority is protecting \u200bCanadians and keeping communities safe,&#8221; Olszewski said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Climate experts say rising temperatures have led to drier timber and more wildfires in \u200brecent years in Canada, home to some of \u2060the world&#8217;s largest forest landscapes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;As our climate warms, we&#8217;re seeing &#8230; more extreme weather, and we&#8217;re going to see more fire,&#8221; said Mike Flannigan, a professor of wildland fire at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Shortly after taking office in 2025, Trump imposed tariffs on several key imports from Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=637\">Federal Employees Can Download TikTok on Government Devices, DOJ Says<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Carney&#8217;s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump&#8217;s remarks. Carney said on Thursday the United States could do more to combat climate change that is leading to more prolonged drought \u2060and rising temperatures around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The two men are likely to meet at the FIFA World Cup final in New \u2060Jersey on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Many blazes this year are in the giant province of Ontario and are concentrated in the remote and sparsely populated northwest, where the only mode of transport is via air. So far, 650,000 acres (2,630 sq km) have burned, compared with 600,000 acres at the same time last year. Thousands of people have been evacuated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8216;NOTHING REMAINING&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, also known as Collins First Nation, in northwestern Ontario went up in flames, forcing residents to evacuate by boat and seek shelter in Thunder Bay, Matthew Hoppe, the community&#8217;s incident commander, told Reuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;There was nothing remaining.
