July 16 (Reuters) – Shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to \u2060Yum \u2060Brands’ Taco Bell restaurants \u2060by California-based supplier Taylor Farms has\u00a0been identified by investigators as \u200ba potential source of contamination in the cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened thousands of \u200cpeople in the U.S., the \u200cWashington Post reported on Thursday, citing two individuals familiar with the \u2060investigation.<\/p>\n

While the \u2060U.S. has experienced outbreaks of the parasitic intestinal infection before, the \u200bscale and geographic spread of this year’s outbreak are significantly larger, prompting concern among health officials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The outbreak, which began on May 1, has been concentrated in Michigan, \u200bwith Ohio and New York also reporting a large number of infections. \u2060Michigan health \u2060officials on Thursday reported \u20604,312 cases \u200bof the parasitic illness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this \u200bweek it had identified \u2060a likely link among cases reported in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, suggesting many of the infections may stem from a common source, according to the report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Taco Bell said earlier this week it had removed a limited \u2060number of ingredients from some restaurants as a precautionary measure, but stressed \u2060that U.S. health authorities had not linked the outbreak to the chain, any specific food item or a supplier.<\/p>\n

Yum Brands and Taylor Farms did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Separately, Bloomberg News reported that the U.S. FDA is expected to soon advise \u2060consumers to avoid shredded lettuce at Taco Bell restaurants in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cyclosporiasis can be contracted by consuming food, typically raw fruits and vegetables or water contaminated with feces, and \u200bcauses diarrhea, nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.<\/p>\n
