LIMA, July 15 (Reuters) – Peru’s \u2060President-elect \u2060Keiko Fujimori could face \u2060new protests in mining areas as her government \u200btries to spearhead large copper and other mining projects that have \u200cbeen delayed for years, according \u200cto a study released Wednesday by the Observatory of \u2060Mining Conflicts \u2060in Peru.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peru is the world’s third-largest copper producer. The \u200bcountry has about $64 billion in planned mining investments, many in poor rural regions where local communities say they have seen too few benefits \u200band fear environmental damage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u2022 The study said most of Peru’s main \u2060mining \u2060regions voted against Fujimori \u2060in \u200bthe election, raising the risk of tensions if her government pushes projects \u200bforward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Fujimori, who \u2060takes office on July 28, has promised to speed up mining investment, including with a fast-track approval system and tax incentives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 She has also said 40% of mining revenue should go \u2060to local people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Peru’s ombudsman has said nearly 200 social conflicts \u2060are ongoing, including 64 linked to mining and other environmental disputes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Southern Copper’s $1.8 billion Tia Maria copper project, approved to start operating in 2027, could face opposition, according to David Velazco, environmental advocate from local nonprofit Fedepaz.<\/p>\n
