July 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department \u2060of \u2060Justice on Wednesday said it \u2060was prohibited by law from releasing\u00a0unredacted files on Jeffrey Epstein \u200brequested by New Mexico, escalating a feud between the nation’s top legal agency and \u200cstate officials investigating the late sex \u200coffender.<\/p>\n

It came after New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez released a letter \u2060on Tuesday \u2060accusing the DOJ\u00a0of deliberately obstructing the state’s criminal probe of Epstein \u200bby failing to hand over the files.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cFederal law, court orders, and privacy protections for victims and witnesses do not allow us to release millions of unredacted documents,” a U.S. \u200bJustice Department spokesperson said in a statement. “We will continue to follow federal law \u2060and \u2060the court orders that are \u2060in \u200bplace.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In February, the Democratic-run state re-opened an investigation into activities at Epstein’s former ranch, \u200bsouth of the capital \u2060Santa Fe, where he is accused of abusing women and girls for nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In response to the state’s\u00a0request that month for unredacted files, Torrez said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Mexico on July 10 provided 31 pages of documents \u2060that had already been made public, contained redacted material that was unusable \u2060or were photocopies of local news stories.<\/p>\n

“It is a reflection of a deliberate choice not to cooperate,” Torrez wrote in the Tuesday letter. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

New Mexico’s state legislature is running a parallel investigation — last month, it subpoenaed U.S. attorneys’ offices in three states and the U.S. Virgin Islands for information on whether and why they chose not to prosecute Epstein.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The legislature’s “Truth \u2060Commission” is expected to release an interim report this month. Torrez has yet to announce any findings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Pressure from victims and advocates on the DOJ to release the Epstein files in their entirety has\u00a0dogged President\u00a0Donald Trump, who \u200bhas said the country should move on.<\/p>\n
