{"id":584,"date":"2026-07-15T20:14:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T20:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=584"},"modified":"2026-07-15T20:14:34","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T20:14:34","slug":"us-agency-to-vote-to-end-39-local-tv-station-ownership-cap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=584","title":{"rendered":"US Agency to Vote to End 39% Local TV Station Ownership Cap"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By David Shepardson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON, July 15 (Reuters) &#8211; The chair \u2060of \u2060the Federal Communications Commission \u2060said Wednesday the agency will vote to rescind the 85-year-old \u200brule that bars broadcasters from reaching more than 39% of the total number of \u200cU.S. TV households.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=582\">White House Weighs Extending Jones Act Waivers as Iran Conflict Raises Price Concerns<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>FCC Chair Brendan \u200cCarr confirmed Wednesday the agency will vote to lift the cap in \u2060favor \u2060of a new case-by-case approach. &#8220;Our new proposal would allow the FCC \u200bto approve deals that exceed the 39 percent cap, but only if doing so would promote the public interest,&#8221; Carr said in a essay published Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Under current rules, \u200bstations with weaker over-the-air signals can be partially counted against a company&#8217;s \u2060ownership cap.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Critics \u2060say only Congress can \u2060lift \u200bthe cap and argue it will lead to excessive concentration among station owners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In March, \u200bthe FCC approved \u2060the $3.54 billion sale of local television station owner Tegna to Nexstar despite objections from Democratic-led states.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=580\">Musk\u2019s XAI Sues Grok User Over Sexualized \u2018Deepfakes\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The acquisition, if not reversed by courts, will expand Nexstar&#8217;s presence to cover 80% of U.S. TV households. The FCC said it was waiving \u2060the 39% rule in approving the deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A judge has halted the deal \u2060pending a court challenge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In February, President Donald Trump said he supported the deal. Trump has repeatedly pressured Carr to revoke the licenses of Comcast-owned NBC and ABC stations and Carr ordered an unusual early license review of Disney&#8217;s eight company-owned ABC stations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Critics have said Carr is violating the free speech rights of broadcasters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, a Democrat, said the &#8220;cap reflects Congress\u2019 judgment that excessive concentration threatens competition, \u2060localism, and viewpoint diversity. It is not a suggestion.
