July 14 (Reuters) – Lab-confirmed cases linked to \u2060a \u2060U.S. outbreak of cyclosporiasis \u2060have risen to 1,645, the Centers for Disease \u200bControl and Prevention said on Tuesday, up by more than 800 cases \u200cfrom its last update \u200ca week ago.<\/p>\n

Cases have now been reported across 34 states, \u2060and \u2060have resulted in 141 hospitalizations as of July 13, according \u200bto the health agency. No deaths have been reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection that can be contracted by consuming food \u2014 typically raw fruits \u200band vegetables \u2014 or water contaminated with feces, according to the U.S. \u2060CDC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While \u2060the United States has \u2060experienced \u200boutbreaks of the gastrointestinal illness before, the scale and geographic spread of \u200bthis year’s outbreak \u2060are significantly larger, prompting concern among health officials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The agency cautioned that there is a roughly six-week lag between the onset of illness and the reporting of cases, which means more infections are \u2060likely to be identified as additional data is received.<\/p>\n

The CDC said \u2060it is also aware of more than 5,100 additional cases that require further analysis and confirmation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The current U.S. outbreak, which began on May 1, is centered in Michigan, with Ohio and New York also reporting high numbers of cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Separately, Michigan health officials on Tuesday reported 3,309 cases in the state, an increase of 669 cases since the \u2060last update on Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

U.S. health officials have not identified the source of contamination and are tracing foods linked to cases through the supply chain, potentially to the farm level, \u200busing genetic sequencing where needed.<\/p>\n
