{"id":54,"date":"2026-05-27T05:12:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T05:12:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=54"},"modified":"2026-05-27T05:12:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T05:12:28","slug":"uber-lyft-drivers-in-massachusetts-form-first-us-ride-share-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=54","title":{"rendered":"Uber, Lyft Drivers in Massachusetts Form First US Ride-Share Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Nate Raymond<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>BOSTON, May 26 (Reuters) &#8211; Ride-share drivers for app-based companies \u2060such \u2060as Uber and Lyft have unionized \u2060in Massachusetts, forming what state officials and labor leaders said was the first \u200bofficially recognized organization in the U.S. to represent such gig workers.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=52\">US Justice Department Sues UCLA Alleging Antisemitic Educational Environment<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The newly formed App Drivers Union received certification from the Massachusetts \u200cDepartment of Labor Relations on Friday \u200cto represent nearly 70,000 ride-share drivers operating as independent contractors in the state.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;It changes the game for ride-share \u2060workers across this \u2060country,&#8221; Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat, said at a rally with drivers \u200band labor activists in Boston on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The certification occurred after voters in November 2024 approved a ballot measure that created a novel framework to allow drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft to organize and bargain collectively over pay and benefits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That vote \u200bfollowed a years-long, nationwide battle over whether ride-share drivers should be considered independent contractors or employees entitled \u2060to \u2060benefits and wage protections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Drivers for \u2060Uber and Lyft do \u200bnot have the right to organize under the National Labor Relations Act, a federal law that covers \u200bonly traditional employees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But under the \u2060state law, drivers could form a union after collecting signatures from at least 25% of active drivers in Massachusetts &#8211; a condition that was met by union supporters. The union is backed by 32BJ SEIU, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=50\">US Kills One Man in Strike in Eastern Pacific<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The workers who built these billion-dollar corporations deserve \u2060a union contract and a seat at the table,&#8221; IAM President Brian Bryant said at Tuesday&#8217;s \u2060rally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He and other union leaders held up Massachusetts as a key labor victory as unionization efforts mount in other states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In California, ride-share drivers gained the right to unionize under legislation signed into law in October by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Similar legislation is pending in Illinois.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Lyft and Uber did not campaign against the Massachusetts ballot measure.
