{"id":493,"date":"2026-07-11T04:15:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T04:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=493"},"modified":"2026-07-11T04:15:04","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T04:15:04","slug":"flash-flooding-traps-hundreds-of-people-in-rural-missouri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=493","title":{"rendered":"Flash Flooding Traps Hundreds of People in Rural Missouri"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Steve Gorman<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>July 10 (Reuters) &#8211; Flash flooding unleashed by torrential downpours from \u2060a \u2060wave of thunderstorms struck the Ozark Mountains \u2060in rural southeastern Missouri on Friday, trapping hundreds of people in high water along the \u200brain-swollen Black River, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=492\">US Pain at the Pump Worsens After More US-Iran Fighting Lifts Oil Prices<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>National Guard teams in Black Hawk helicopters were flying some 200 stranded people to higher ground on Friday afternoon from \u200cCamp Taum Sauk in Lesterville, Missouri, about \u200c100 miles (160 km) south of St. Louis, according to State Highway Patrol Sergeant Eddie Young.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>About half of the evacuees from the \u2060summer youth camp \u2060were children, and the rest were counselors and other staff, Young said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Separately, rescue teams in \u200bboats rescued three people who were stranded elsewhere along the river in Reynolds County late in the day, he said. As of Friday evening, no fatalities had been reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Earlier in the day, the Reynolds County Sheriff&#8217;s Office reported that emergency teams had rescued more than 90 people from \u200bfloodwaters that inundated homes, campsites and vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Joann Franklin was one of them, telling St. Louis television station KMOV-TV, a CBS \u2060affiliate, \u2060that she, her husband and \u2060their dog and cat \u200bwere rescued from the roof of their house.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;This is the highest that the water&#8217;s ever been, and I&#8217;ve lived here \u200bsince 1979, so (almost) 50 years,&#8221; she \u2060said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Conditions became so precarious that two rescue boats carrying safety workers capsized in the turbulent waters, but crew members were all safely recovered downstream by fellow emergency personnel, the sheriff&#8217;s office said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=490\">California Cannot Seek Damages From 23andMe Successor Over 2023 Data Breach<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Another 20 to 30 people listed as missing in Reynolds County were later rescued or turned up safe, including a group reported to have been swept off the roof of a building as it collapsed in \u2060floodwaters at the Bearcat Getaway Campground, Young said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>One other person remained missing in adjacent Crawford County, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Numerous \u2060roads were washed out through the region, making it difficult for emergency crews to reach many riverfront campgrounds to ensure that nobody else was trapped, but search teams planned to return to those spots as floodwaters receded, Young said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Black River and nearby streams were transformed into raging torrents by a series of thunderstorms that dumped 6 to 12 inches (150 to 300 mm) of rain on the region overnight and early Friday morning, according to the sheriff&#8217;s office. Additional showers were expected on Friday night in the rain-saturated region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Several counties in the mountainous, hilly Lead Belt of southeastern Missouri, in the eastern Ozarks, were the hardest hit, officials said.
