July \u206010 (Reuters) – \u2060The U.S. Food and \u2060Drug Administration said on Friday it has approved a wearable \u200bform of Sanofi’s blood cancer drug, Sarclisa, offering multiple myeloma patients a less burdensome \u200calternative to intravenous infusions.<\/p>\n

It is \u200cthe first cancer drug approved by the FDA that can be delivered \u2060through \u2060an on-body injector, attached to the skin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The approval boosts the French \u200bdrugmaker as new CEO Bel\u00e9n Garijo seeks to address investor concerns about reliance on asthma drug Dupixent, its biggest-selling medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The new form of the drug is approved for \u200bpatients with multiple myeloma \u2014 a rare and aggressive blood cancer that starts \u2060in the \u2060bone marrow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Subcutaneous dosing can \u2060significantly \u200breduce time spent in infusion centers for patients who receive repeated treatment courses, while \u200balso easing the \u2060strain on oncology clinics and nurses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The infusions can take up to three hours, while the median injection time for the wearable device is 13 minutes, Sanofi has previously said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

An intravenous form of the drug first won FDA approval in \u20602020 for some patients with relapsed multiple myeloma. The fresh approval covers \u2060all existing U.S. indications for the IV form.<\/p>\n

The U.S. list price for the drug with the on-body injector is $8,796 per vial, Sanofi said. A single-dose vial of the IV form starts from $956.10 and can be as much as $4,780.54.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Sarclisa is a type of targeted immunotherapy that binds to myeloma cells, exposing them to an immune system attack. It competes with Johnson & Johnson’s Darzalex.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The FDA’s approval was based on a \u2060late-stage trial that showed Sarclisa delivered through the device worked as well as the IV version.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The drug brought in \u20ac588 million ($671.67 million) in sales in 2025 and analysts expect \u20ac710 million this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
