WASHINGTON, July 9 (Reuters) – The U.S. House \u2060of \u2060Representatives is set to vote next \u2060week on a\u00a0bill to make daylight saving time permanent, according to \u200ba notice posted on Thursday.<\/p>\n

In May, the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 48-1 in favor of \u200cthe Sunshine Protection Act. The U.S. \u200cSenate voted unanimously in March 2022 to make daylight saving time permanent but the House \u2060never took \u2060up the measure in the face of opposition. The proposal the House \u200bwill consider next week would allow states to opt out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Daylight saving time \u2014 putting the clocks forward one hour during the summer half of the year \u2014 has been in place in nearly all of the \u200bUnited States since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Supporters of the House measure say the time shift causes sleep \u2060disturbances, \u2060greater workplace injuries and more \u2060car crashes. \u200bThey also believe brighter evenings would spur more economic activity during winter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

President Donald Trump has \u200bpushed for an end to \u2060the twice-annual clock- switching, saying in May that it was “time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If it passes the House, the U.S. Senate would need to again consider whether \u2060to take up the measure, which faces opposition from U.S. Senator Tom Cotton, an \u2060Arkansas Republican, and others.<\/p>\n

Cotton has said it would result in absurdly late winter sunrises and force children to go to school in darkness in much of the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Representative Vern Buchanan, a Florida Republican who has put forward the bill regularly since 2018, proposed it again this year. The plan is popular in the lawmaker’s home state because it would allow more evening hours of play on golf courses and sports fields.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Representative Frank Pallone, a New Jersey Democrat, said permanent daylight saving time is “better \u2060for safety and will boost New Jersey\u2019s tourism industry. Let\u2019s stop changing the clocks twice a year.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The United States used year-round daylight saving time during World War Two and enacted it again in 1974 to reduce energy use. But it proved deeply \u200bunpopular and Congress repealed it later that year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
