{"id":46,"date":"2026-05-26T22:42:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T22:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=46"},"modified":"2026-05-26T22:42:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T22:42:35","slug":"us-and-thailand-speed-lng-talks-as-war-hits-qatar-exports-sources-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=46","title":{"rendered":"US and Thailand Speed LNG Talks as War Hits Qatar Exports, Sources Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Timothy Gardner<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) &#8211; The U.S. and Thailand \u2060are \u2060in talks on new long-term \u2060supply of U.S.-produced liquefied natural gas, two sources said on Tuesday, negotiations \u200bthat have accelerated since the U.S.-Israeli-led war on Iran led to LNG production damage in key exporter \u200cQatar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=44\">EXPLAINER: Why Did Russia Invade Ukraine?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The talks center on a binding \u200clong-term deal between Venture Global and Thailand&#8217;s state-controlled energy company PTT PCL, said the sources familiar \u2060with discussions \u2060who were granted anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The \u200bsources did not detail the volumes or duration of any new LNG contracts being discussed, but they\u00a0typically run 15 or more years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Last October, after trade talks the administration of President Donald Trump and Thailand released a \u200bjoint statement saying Thai companies would purchase about $5.4 billion a year in U.S. energy products \u2060including \u2060LNG, crude oil and ethane.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The \u2060U.S. and Israel \u200bjointly attacked Iran on February 28, which retaliated\u00a0with strikes on Qatar&#8217;s LNG infrastructure in Ras \u200bLaffan that destroyed 17%, or \u206012.8 million metric tons per year, of the country&#8217;s LNG export capacity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Qatar is the world&#8217;s second-largest LNG exporter after the U.S. Repairs could take between three and five years, QatarEnergy&#8217;s CEO and state minister for energy affairs has told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=42\">What to Know About Ukraine\u2019s Critical Minerals, and Why Trump Has His Eye on Them<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A Venture Global press representative declined to comment. PTT did not \u2060immediately respond to a request for comment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Thailand, Southeast Asia&#8217;s biggest LNG importer, has been \u2060looking to diversify its supply as it steadily displaces coal for electricity generation. In January, French utility Engie signed a 15-year deal to supply LNG to power plants owned by Thai company Gulf Development PCL.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>U.S. LNG exporter Cheniere Energy said in March that Asian customers have asked for more LNG as a result of the war. The company, the largest U.S. LNG exporter, has said it is working to speed completion of two units known as trains at its Corpus Christi, Texas plant.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0PTT last year signed \u2060an agreement to procure 2 million metric tons of LNG per year from Glenfarne&#8217;s Alaska LNG project over 20 years, Glenfarne said.
