And an iron law of politics is that when the cost of living goes up, the president gets the blame. And when it goes down, the president will claim credit.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=442\">Trump to Remove Syria From US Terrorism Sponsor List<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>We\u2019re watching this play out with Walmart\u2019s <u>announcement<\/u> that it\u2019s rolling back prices on summertime staples \u2013 snacks, sodas, cherries, corn on the cob, ice cream and others. One pound of 73% ground beef is coming down to $5.94 from $6.74.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>With Republicans expected to suffer in this year\u2019s midterm elections in part because of inflation, President Donald Trump claimed credit on social media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Walmart\u2019s cuts came \u201cat my Administration&#8217;s request to celebrate our great Country&#8217;s 250th birthday,\u201d he <u>said<\/u>. \u201cMy Administration is lowering prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But go back and look at the Walmart statement announcing the rollbacks. It makes no mention of Trump, of an administration request \u2013 or even of July 4. That by itself doesn\u2019t mean it didn\u2019t happen: Walmart may simply be avoiding politics altogether in its quest to pull consumers of all ideological stripes into its aisles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But to understand what\u2019s actually happening in Bentonville, Arkansas, where the nation\u2019s largest retailer and grocer is based, consider the message the company has been sending to investors and consumers all year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>The Bentonville Bargains<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In particular, check out a late-May  featuring Walmart CEO John Furner and the company\u2019s CFO, John David Rainey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Furner said Walmart would be \u201cextending\u201d price rollbacks that started in the second half of 2025, already had 7,200 such reductions in place and was making it a priority to woo budget-minded consumers hit hard by inflation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But the more interesting bit was an observation from Rainey, tied to the February Supreme Court ruling that Trump\u2019s signature tariffs are illegal. (Walmart has requested <u>$2.4 billion<\/u> in potential refunds but could be eligible for up to <u>$10.2 billion<\/u> by some estimates.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Asked by an analyst on the call what it would do with the money, Rainey replied: \u201cWe think the single best return that we can have on a dollar of capital right now is to invest in the customer and invest in price.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about the number of rollbacks that we have right now. That\u2019s a bigger stretch than the average working-class budget.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>The West Wing Window<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It\u2019s the political rather than economic dimension of this that matters at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., with the elections just months away and the administration <u>struggling<\/u> to convince Americans that it has a handle on inflation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Part of the problem in 2026 has been the monthslong jump in gas prices as a result of Trump\u2019s war on Iran.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But another part of the problem is Trump\u2019s language about the problem, like saying \u201cI love the inflation\u201d (the White House later claimed he meant he thought the latest spike would be temporary) or saying the issue of \u201caffordability\u201d is a hoax.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In May, he told reporters he does not take economic hardships into consideration \u201ceven a little bit\u201d as he negotiates with Iran to end the war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing that matters when I\u2019m talking about Iran \u2013 they can\u2019t have a nuclear weapon,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation. I don\u2019t think about anybody. I think about one thing: You cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That may be the statesman-like position. But it\u2019s a clip-and-save moment for Democrats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>Bottom Line<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Claiming credit for Walmart\u2019s price reductions would seem to send two politically helpful messages for Trump. It signals that he\u2019s fighting high grocery costs.
