NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters) – \u2060Former \u2060National Basketball Association players \u2060Malik Beasley and Ed Davis have been indicted on \u200bgambling-related charges, U.S. prosecutors said on Monday, joining other professional athletes charged \u200cwith rigging bets on player \u200cperformance.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The charges followed\u00a0a string of cases that have raised \u2060concerns \u2060about the integrity of sports, amid an explosion of legalized \u200bsports betting in the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn said that prior to three separate games in 2024, Beasley told Davis that he intended to \u200boverperform or underperform in certain statistical categories such as points or \u2060rebounding \u2060in exchange for the \u2060promise \u200bof a bribe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u2022 Davis then told several co-conspirators of Beasley’s plans, to \u200ballow them to place \u2060hundreds of thousands of dollars in wagers, many of which were successful, prosecutors said. The co-conspirators were also charged.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks at the time. He had earned tens of \u2060millions of dollars since starting in the NBA in 2016, but had \u2060also accumulated multimillion-dollar gambling losses, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Steven Haney, a lawyer for Beasley, said in a statement, “Malik maintains his presumption of innocence throughout this two-year investigation. We ask that people reserve judgment until all the facts are known.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Lawyers for Davis did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Neither the NBA nor the Bucks immediately responded to requests for \u2060comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u2022 Beasley and Davis were teammates on the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2020-2021 season and maintained a close relationship, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n
