{"id":365,"date":"2026-06-22T19:42:51","date_gmt":"2026-06-22T19:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=365"},"modified":"2026-06-22T19:42:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-22T19:42:51","slug":"judge-blocks-trumps-use-of-revamped-immigration-database-for-voter-checks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=365","title":{"rendered":"Judge Blocks Trump&#8217;s Use of Revamped Immigration Database for Voter Checks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Luc Cohen<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>June 22 (Reuters) &#8211; A federal judge on Monday blocked the Trump \u2060administration \u2060from using a revamped version of an \u2060immigration database for checking the accuracy of state voter rolls, dealing a blow to U.S. President \u200bDonald Trump&#8217;s efforts to boost the role of the federal government in elections ahead of the midterm elections in November.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=363\">Greenspan Playbook to Get a Replay Under Warsh<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Last year, the Department of Homeland \u200cSecurity revamped a system it uses to \u200cverify individuals&#8217; citizenship and immigration status to make it easier for state and local officials to use it to make sure voters \u2060were U.S. citizens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a \u206075-page decision on Monday, U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan in Washington, D.C., sided with \u200bvoting rights and privacy advocates who argued that the overhaul of the system, known as SAVE, made it less accurate and risked disenfranchising eligible voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The federal government has knowingly trampled on the privacy rights of American citizens in a manner that threatens the sacred right to vote,&#8221; wrote Sooknanan, an appointee \u200bof Democratic President Joe Biden. &#8220;This Court cannot stand idly by while that happens.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Neither DHS nor the Justice Department, which represents the \u2060administration \u2060in court, immediately responded to requests \u2060for comment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>TRUMP SEEKS TO \u200bBOOST FEDERAL ROLE IN ELECTIONS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s Republicans are locked in a fierce battle to maintain control of both houses of Congress \u200bin the November 3 midterm elections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In \u2060the U.S., federal elections are administered by individual states. Trump and his allies have long asserted that states are not doing enough to prevent voter fraud, even though audits and academic studies have found that it is rare. Trump argues, falsely, that his loss in the 2020 presidential election was due to fraud.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>His administration&#8217;s efforts to boost the federal government&#8217;s control over elections have largely been stymied by the courts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Three federal \u2060judges in separate\u00a0cases have blocked Trump&#8217;s 2025 executive order requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and \u2060restricting the counting of mail ballots.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=361\">Clive Davis, Towering Music Executive Who Reshaped American Sound, Dies at 94<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A March 2026 executive order restricting mail-in voting has also drawn\u00a0legal challenges. Federal judges have also rejected nine of the lawsuits the administration has brought against 30 states and the District of Columbia for refusing to hand over their complete voter rolls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Critics say Republicans are driven less by concerns over election security than by an effort to gain political advantage by narrowing the electorate, risking the disenfranchisement\u00a0of eligible, often Democratic-leaning voters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>DATABASE REVAMP RAISES PRIVACY CONCERNS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s SAVE revamp allowed users to search many records at a time and gave them access to individuals&#8217; Social Security numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Since then, several Republican-led states have compared their voter lists to the database and cancelled the registrations of registered voters flagged \u2060as noncitizens.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The advocacy groups who brought the lawsuit, including the League of Women Voters, said that has resulted in people who were wrongfully identified as noncitizens being kicked off voter rolls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Voting-rights advocates argue that SAVE can be outdated, meaning immigrants who have been naturalized and are thus eligible to vote are sometimes labeled as noncitizens.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sooknanan ruled that the revamp also \u200bviolated privacy laws restricting the federal government&#8217;s disclosure of Social Security numbers and other information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>(Reporting by Luc \u200bCohen in New York; Editing by Noeleen Walder and Matthew Lewis)<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=359\">US Authorizes Iranian Oil Sales Amid Talks on Final Peace Deal<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News is a recognized leader in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings.
