June 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of \u2060Defense \u2060needs $80 billion to cover \u2060costs from the Iran war as well as \u200bother non-war-related bills, Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg told lawmakers in \u200cphone calls this week, the \u200cWall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar \u2060with the \u2060matter.<\/p>\n

A full U.S. supplemental request, which will include money for \u200bthe Pentagon as well as non-defense priorities such as farm and disaster relief, could be sent to lawmakers in the coming days, \u200bthe newspaper added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Reuters could not immediately verify the report. The White \u2060House \u2060and Pentagon were not \u2060immediately \u200bavailable for comment outside business hours when contacted by Reuters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Iran war \u200bhas cost around $25 \u2060billion, a Pentagon official told Reuters in April providing the first official estimate of war costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, the full cost of the conflict, which Trump began alongside Israel on February 28, has remained \u2060an open question on Capitol Hill and\u00a0an initial $200 billion request \u2060for additional funding met stiff opposition from lawmakers.<\/p>\n

White House budget director Russell Vought told a hearing in April of the House of Representatives Budget Committee that he had no estimate for the cost of the war, as he defended Trump’s request for a $1.5 trillion annual military budget.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The proposed budget reflects Republican priorities ahead of November\u2019s midterm elections, \u2060where the party is trying to keep control of Congress but is facing growing voter anxiety over rising living costs, high energy prices and the financial burden of the \u200bIran war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
