PARIS, June 4 (Reuters) – The United States will \u2060respect \u2060tariff caps in trade deals \u2060struck with the European Union, Japan and other countries, \u200band planned U.S. tariffs over forced labour provide the legal basis to do so, \u200cU.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer \u200csaid on Thursday.<\/p>\n

“We understand that a deal is a deal,” Greer told \u2060reporters on \u2060the sidelines of an OECD ministerial meeting in Paris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Washington has \u200bstruck deals with Brussels and Tokyo that limit U.S. tariffs on most EU or Japanese imports to a maximum of 15%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, Greer’s office on Tuesday unveiled a new \u200bset of tariffs on 60 countries after determining that they had failed to \u2060curb \u2060trade in goods made \u2060with forced \u200blabour. The EU would face a 10% tariff and Japan 12.5%. A further \u200bSection 301 investigation into \u2060excess manufacturing capacity could see overall tariffs on the two economies’ goods push well past 15%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Greer, talking about the EU trade deal, said the agreement acknowledged that the U.S. could impose tariffs “up to a certain level” and that \u2060the Section 301 investigations gave U.S. President Donald Trump the authority to do \u2060so.<\/p>\n

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, who spoke with Greer at the OECD meeting, said both sides agreed that “the deal is the deal”, which meant for the European side the terms agreed at Turnberry with an all-inclusive 15% tariff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sefcovic said EU countries had been surprised to find themselves targeted by tariffs over forced labour on account of their high labour standards, but he expected the European Parliament to approve \u2060the Turnberry deal with the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The EU is working to introduce a ban in December 2027 across the bloc on all products involving forced labour, irrespective of whether they originate in the EU or \u200bin a third country, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
