CHICAGO\/MEXICO CITY, \u2060June 3 (Reuters) – Samples of a suspected infestation \u200bof the flesh-eating screwworm parasite on a cattle farm in \u200cLa Pryor, Texas, have \u200cbeen sent to a federal government lab \u2060in \u2060Iowa to be tested, Texas Representative Don McLaughlin said \u200bWednesday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The samples were taken from\u00a0two calves on the same ranch on Tuesday, McLaughlin said, adding that he had seen \u200bphotos and videos of the cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A photo seen \u2060by Reuters, \u2060which McLaughlin confirmed as \u2060the \u200bsame case, had been circulating among livestock producers earlier \u200bon Wednesday, rattling \u2060cattle futures. Reuters could not immediately verify the photo.<\/p>\n

The Texas Animal Health Commission told Reuters on Wednesday that there has been no confirmed case of \u2060New World screwworm in Texas.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The U.S. Department of Agriculture, \u2060which is leading the screwworm prevention effort in the United States, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier in the week the agency said that McLaughlin, who had said that a case was confirmed one mile south of the Texas border, had inaccurate information. \u2060The USDA confirmed a case 25 miles south of the Texas border in Coahuila state on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
