{"id":249,"date":"2026-06-03T10:16:26","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T10:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=249"},"modified":"2026-06-03T10:16:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T10:16:26","slug":"us-targets-india-with-forced-labour-tariff-amid-talks-on-trade-pact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=249","title":{"rendered":"US Targets India With Forced Labour Tariff Amid Talks on Trade Pact"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Manoj Kumar<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>NEW DELHI, June 3 (Reuters) &#8211; The United States has \u2060proposed \u2060an additional tariff of 12.5% on \u2060imports from India, saying it is among 60 economies that failed to curb \u200bimports made with forced labour, a step that threatens to complicate two-way trade talks underway in New Delhi.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=247\">US Proposes Tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on Goods From 60 Economies Over Forced Labor Failures<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The proposal by the \u200cU.S. Trade Representative&#8217;s office came on \u200cthe second of three days of talks between Indian trade officials and a U.S. delegation led by Assistant USTR \u2060Brendan Lynch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>India &#8220;has \u2060failed to impose and effectively enforce a forced labour import prohibition,&#8221; the office \u200bsaid in a 92-page report on Tuesday that called the South Asian nation&#8217;s policies unreasonable and a burden on U.S. commerce.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labour is unacceptable,&#8221; U.S. Trade \u200bRepresentative Jamieson Greer said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;This creates a dynamic where American workers are forced to compete globally on an \u2060unlevel playing \u2060field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The proposed tariffs were not \u2060final, however, India&#8217;s \u200bcommerce ministry said on Wednesday, adding that the USTR would consider public opinion before deciding on the \u200bmeasures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;India remains engaged with the United \u2060States on the matter as a part of Section 301 proceedings,&#8221; it said in a statement, adding that New Delhi was also engaged with Washington on finalising a framework agreement unveiled in February.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The proposal follows a Section 301 unfair trade practices investigation as the Trump administration seeks to rebuild emergency tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court in \u2060February.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=245\">Adviser Oz Calls Trump Medical Exam \u2018Spectacular\u2019 Though Questions Linger<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It placed India among 54 economies that lack a forced-labour import prohibition and therefore face the \u2060higher proposed duty.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Six other nations, from Canada, Ecuador and the European Union to Indonesia, Mexico and Pakistan, have such prohibitions but face a lower tariff of 10% for failing to enforce them effectively.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Ajay Srivastava, founder of Global Trade Research Initiative, said the finding could be challenged, as the USTR investigation was not about forced labour in Indian exports but whether India blocked imports tied to forced labour elsewhere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The proposed tariffs are viewed as part of broader U.S. pressure tactics, and India should treat Section 301 actions and the India\u2013U.S. bilateral trade agreement negotiations separately,&#8221; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>An Indian government source had \u2060told Reuters that New Delhi planned to raise the issue of the Section 301 investigation with Lynch&#8217;s team and seek tariff relief as part of the broader two-way trade deal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The USTR report also identified India as an intermediary in cotton supply chains linked to Chinese forced-labour inputs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The agency has sought \u200bpublic comments on the tariff plans by July 6, with a hearing set for \u200bJuly 7.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=243\">USTR Seeks Comment on Possible US-China Tariff Cuts Under Board of Trade<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>(Reporting by Manoj Kumar; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News is a recognized leader in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings.
