WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) – U.S. \u2060Secretary \u2060of State \u2060Marco Rubio told lawmakers on Tuesday \u200bthat the U.S. would not let \u200cIranians with ties to \u200cthe Islamic Revolutionary Guard \u2060Corps (IRGC) \u2060embed themselves in the country’s delegation to take \u200bpart in the soccer World Cup that begins this month.<\/p>\n

The Iranian team will \u200bplay matches in the United States but \u2060will \u2060be based in \u2060Mexico \u200bfor the tournament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite the war the U.S. and \u200bIsrael\u00a0launched against \u2060Iran in late February, Rubio said Washington had “no problem” with the Iranian soccer team and its \u2060support staff entering the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“What we’re not going to \u2060allow is for them to embed in their delegation a bunch of people that we know have nothing to do with athletics and have ties to the IRGC or things of that nature, \u2060so we were going to watch that very closely,” Rubio said at a House of Representatives committee \u200bhearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n
