{"id":231,"date":"2026-06-02T20:14:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T20:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=231"},"modified":"2026-06-02T20:14:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T20:14:31","slug":"dhs-threatens-international-travel-to-u-s-as-world-cup-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=231","title":{"rendered":"DHS Threatens International Travel to U.S. as World Cup Looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>Immigration enforcement may be jumping from border to boarding pass as Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin threatens to stop processing international travelers at airports in so-called \u201c<u>sanctuary<\/u>\u201d locales that forbid local authorities from cooperating with federal border policing.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=229\">Union at Colombia\u2019s Ecopetrol Launches 24-Hour Strike Over Labor Talks<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The proposal, which would weaponize air travel to assert federal dominance over state and city authorities, threatens to plunge arrivals at many of the country\u2019s busiest airports into chaos right as the U.S. is set to play host to millions of fans attending 2026 FIFA World Cup games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But the White House has not publicly endorsed Mullin\u2019s notion. And even one of Mullin\u2019s fellow Cabinet members has come out against it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe have people from around the world and around the country that need to be able to fly into all different kinds of places,\u201d Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said during a congressional hearing last month. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t shut down air travel in a state that doesn\u2019t agree with our politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>What Mullin Says<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Despite the silence from President Donald Trump on the matter, Mullin has repeatedly floated pulling Customs and Border Protection officers out of jobs processing international flights and moving them to shore up security at Immigration and Customs Enforcement buildings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re currently drawing up plans to say listen, in these sanctuary cities where the local, radical-left Democrats aren\u2019t allowing us to do our jobs, and enforce federal laws, then we shouldn\u2019t be processing international flights into their cities either,\u201d <u>Mullin told Fox News<\/u> early last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t want us to enforce immigration but they want us to process immigration at their facilities?\u201d he asked. \u201cNothing about that makes sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a subsequent Fox News interview, Mullin seemed to fine-tune the threat, saying he might focus on cities like Newark, New Jersey, site of <u>an angry protest<\/u> against the administration\u2019s immigration policies.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=227\">Blue Origin\u2019s New Glenn Rocket to Return to Flight Before Year Ends, CEO Says<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Mullin floated \u201cprioritizing\u201d other locations for federal officers. \u201cThat may affect international flights coming in and out of their airport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to have to pull Customs and Border Protection officers out,\u201d he said. \u201cBy the way, if you can\u2019t process international flights because customs is closed, you can\u2019t, obviously, process international flights coming in from out of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Mullin said such a step would be taken soon \u201cif things don\u2019t change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>Action Would Have Sweeping Consequences<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fox News didn\u2019t press Mullin about the possible effects of removing CBP officers from many of the country\u2019s busiest airports. If international flights into Los Angeles International Airport can\u2019t be processed, where will those thousands of travelers go? Rerouted to Dallas? How many flights would be delayed or canceled? How much of a heads-up will be provided to Americans who are trying to return home?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The U.S. Travel Association says implementing the policy would have \u201cdevastating\u201d economic effects and \u201ccause immediate and lasting harm.\u201d The group said CBP officers at Newark Liberty International Airport process 5 million Americans returning home every year, many from other states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><svg><\/svg><\/p>\n<p><span>DECISION POINTS: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Deal-Making With Iran and Uber<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cMillions of international visitors will face the same disruption, and with the FIFA World Cup weeks away, the damage to America\u2019s reputation as a welcoming destination would be significant and lasting,\u201d <u>the group said<\/u>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The association said the policy, even if just implemented at Newark, would cost an estimated $8 billion in annual international visitor spending, \u201crisking nearly 50,000 American jobs.\u201d That\u2019s without the impact on cargo flights from overseas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>You\u2019d think the administration would be eager to avoid that sort of turbulence in an election year.
