This time, he will have more company: <u>16 chief executives<\/u> of major U.S. companies, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Tesla head Elon Musk, will join Trump in Beijing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump is expected to receive an elaborate welcome when he arrives in Beijing \u2013 red carpets and all \u2013 but perhaps not as extravagant as last time\u2019s so-called \u201cstate visit-plus\u201d due to rising tensions, experts predict. After a welcome ceremony and one-on-one discussion, Trump and Xi will tour Beijing\u2019s Temple of Heaven.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Will the summit lead to a strengthening of the leaders\u2019 relationship, or of their rivalry?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s been striking so far is that there has been stability in the relationship,\u201d says Jonathan Czin, former director for China at the National Security Council during the Biden administration and current fellow at the Brookings Institution. \u201cIt\u2019s been proven surprisingly resilient, but it is very shallow and fragile.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump\u2019s <u>approval ratings<\/u> among Americans are suffering as the Iran war drags on and increasingly <u>hits people\u2019s wallets<\/u>. But even before the war, China topped the U.S. in <u>global approval rankings<\/u> by the biggest margin in the past 20 years, according to a Gallup poll released in April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>While China would usually \u201cplay nice\u201d ahead of its meeting with the U.S., this time, China is \u201cskirmishing\u201d and attempting to brandish its power \u201cbecause they feel like they can do that with impunity,\u201d says Czin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>What Will Trump and Xi Discuss at the Summit?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The U.S.-China relationship is experiencing tension on multiple fronts. The economic war between the two is escalating as the Trump administration tries to decouple from China and imposes steep tariffs on Chinese goods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Most of Trump\u2019s proposed tariffs were struck down by the Supreme Court in February, including a 145% levy on Chinese imports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The leaders are expected to discuss the creation of a Board of Trade to continue talks about economics, energy, aerospace and agriculture, although Czin gets the sense that the U.S. is more keen on the idea than China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI fully expect the administration to tout whatever comes out of this meeting as being a big deal, and I would counsel skepticism,\u201d says Jonathan Czin, former director for China at the National Security Council during the Biden administration and current fellow at the Brookings Institution.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=19\">Trump\u2019s Influence Faces Test as Voters in 6 States Head to Primaries<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>Where Does Taiwan Fit In?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>American allies in the Far East fear that Xi will push Trump to firmly oppose Taiwanese independence \u2013 and possibly even to \u201crecognize\u201d Beijing\u2019s claim that Taiwan is a part of China, rather than merely \u201cacknowledging\u201d it, according to <u>Chinese analysts<\/u>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>If Trump concedes, Taiwan\u2019s ability to defend itself against a potential Chinese attack would be significantly weakened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For China, the juice might not be \u201cworth the squeeze,\u201d says Czin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI think one of the limiting factors for [Trump] is he doesn\u2019t want a headline that says that he\u2019s been weak on China or that he\u2019s made some kind of big concession.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But the president is known to make impulsive decisions, Czin notes, so no one can be certain about what Trump will do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>The Strait of Hormuz Standoff: Will Xi Use His Influence?<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>There are rumors that Xi will agree to use his influence over Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Trump abandons Taiwan, but Czin says \u201ctrading a damaging concession for a promise from China\u201d would have negative ramifications and \u201cdestroy the trust in U.S. commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Czin thinks that China may have orchestrated last week\u2019s visit of the Iranian foreign minister to \u201cdeflect U.S. pressure\u201d on the Strait of Hormuz issue ahead of Trump\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><b>The AI Factor<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump and Xi will also discuss the artificial intelligence technology that is another focal point in their rivalry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Czin says the presence of Trump\u2019s big tech allies will \u201cunderscore to Beijing that the Trump administration is focused on commercial relations and making business deals more than they are on geopolitical competition and security issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The interpersonal dynamic between the two leaders is another layer Czin finds interesting. Trump and Xi \u201care so mismatched in so many ways,\u201d he says.
