BOGOTA, June 2 (Reuters) – The main \u2060union \u2060at Colombia’s state-run oil \u2060company Ecopetrol launched a 24-hour strike on Tuesday, protesting \u200bwhat it called a deadlock in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement.<\/p>\n

The \u200cstoppage began at 0500 \u200clocal time (1000 GMT), USO union president Martin Ravelo told Reuters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

USO represents \u2060workers at \u2060Ecopetrol, Colombia’s biggest company and one of Latin America’s largest \u200benergy producers. Ravelo said the union includes 25,000 workers employed directly by Ecopetrol and its contractors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He said there had been no progress on any of the \u200bunion’s demands after 25 days of talks, with 14 days left before \u2060the \u2060current stage of direct \u2060negotiations expires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In \u200ban earlier statement posted on X, USO accused an Ecopetrol executive of \u200bfailing to respond to \u2060the union’s proposals and of delaying negotiations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ecopetrol said it remained open to dialogue and had activated a contingency plan to protect workers and maintain operations.<\/p>\n

“The company has implemented the necessary operational measures at its facilities \u2060and workplaces to ensure continuity of the essential public service under its \u2060responsibility and to mitigate any possible operational impact,” Ecopetrol said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Workers at Ecopetrol’s Barrancabermeja refinery told Reuters that access to the industrial complex had been restricted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

UNION DEMANDS<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Sources within the company said the union is seeking a pay rise for unionized workers equal to inflation plus 20% in the first year of the agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

For each of the following four years, the union \u2060is asking for raises equivalent to inflation plus 10%, as well as shorter working hours.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The union is also seeking broader health and education benefits for workers, a proposal the sources said could cost \u200babout 90 trillion pesos ($25.28 billion).<\/p>\n
