U.S. agencies would get up to 30 days to \u200btest the models before they are released to organizations outside the government, according to the order.\u00a0It also directs the agencies to emphasize bolstering cyber defense across government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>SHIFT IN TRUMP&#8217;S AI STRATEGY<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The order signals Trump is shifting his strategy on AI and taking a more active role in \u200bmonitoring the technology&#8217;s capabilities. Since returning to office, he has said the federal government should take a hands-off approach \u2060to \u2060the tech sector, and has \u2060tried to discourage states \u200bfrom adopting AI regulations that he opposes. The president&#8217;s decision to implement voluntary testing could hurt the industry&#8217;s profits \u200bif it slows the rollout of \u2060new models or prompts the companies to change how they perform to address security concerns.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Anthropic, OpenAI and Alphabet&#8217;s Google met with the U.S. government about cybersecurity, a senior U.S. official said in May on a call with reporters about the executive order&#8217;s development. The companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters about the executive order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump was slated to sign \u2060an executive order on artificial intelligence on May 21. The order asks Bessent to work with AI developers and critical infrastructure providers to scan software for cybersecurity flaws and develop patches for those vulnerabilities. Critical infrastructure refers to sectors that are vital to the U.S. economy and deserving of special protection from attacks, such as banks, emergency services and hospitals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Voluntary federal testing has been in place for a few years, with companies such \u2060as OpenAI and Anthropic submitting their models for scrutiny by the U.S. Department of Commerce&#8217;s Center for AI Standards and Innovation, known by a different name under former President Joe Biden.
