June 2 (Reuters) – The U.S. is \u2060discussing \u2060whether to deploy \u2060nuclear weapons in additional European NATO states, \u200bthe Financial Times reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

U.S. officials have signaled \u200copenness to additional deployments \u200cbeyond the existing six countries hosting nuclear-capable \u2060bombers, \u2060the FT said, citing three people briefed on the \u200bdiscussions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The move would involve more countries to host so-called U.S. dual-capable aircraft (DCA), which are able to deliver \u200bnuclear strikes, the newspaper said, while cautioning that an \u2060agreement \u2060to expand U.S. nuclear \u2060hosting \u200bwas not imminent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Countries on NATO’s eastern flank including Poland \u200band some Baltic \u2060states were interested in potentially hosting DCA bases, the report said, adding that discussions were ongoing in NATO channels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Reuters could not immediately verify the \u2060report. The White House, Department of Defense and NATO \u2060did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby has previously said publicly that the U.S. will continue to use its nuclear weapons to protect NATO members, even as European allies take the lead on conventional forces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

U.S. President Donald Trump and many \u2060of his aides have criticised European allies for not spending enough on their militaries and relying on the U.S. for conventional defense. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
