{"id":213,"date":"2026-06-02T05:44:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T05:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=213"},"modified":"2026-06-02T05:44:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T05:44:17","slug":"trump-administration-proposes-25-tariff-to-punish-brazil-over-trade-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=213","title":{"rendered":"Trump Administration Proposes 25% Tariff to Punish Brazil Over Trade Practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By David Lawder<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>WASHINGTON, June 1 (Reuters) &#8211; The Trump administration has proposed a \u2060new \u2060punitive tariff of 25% on many imports \u2060from Brazil, after deciding its practices were unfair on a range of issues from digital \u200btrade to illegal deforestation, top trade official Jamieson Greer said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=211\">US Homeland Security Chief Sees No Need to Stop International Flight Processing at Newark Airport<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The measures, under the Section 301 trade legislation, cover areas such as \u200celectronic payment services, preferential tariffs, intellectual property \u200cprotection and ethanol market access as well, the Office of the United States Trade Representative said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It proposed the new duties as \u2060it released the \u2060results of its unfair trade practices investigation into Brazil that started last year under \u200bSection 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But it excluded some items, such as beef, coffee, rare earths, other metals and aircraft parts from the new tariffs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s practices in the areas investigated &#8220;are unreasonable and burden or restrict U.S. commerce, are thus actionable under Section 301(b) of the \u200bTrade Act,&#8221; the USTR said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The tariffs would partially replace a tariff of 50% on many Brazilian goods \u2060imposed \u2060last year by President Donald \u2060Trump, with 40% as \u200ba punishment for Brazil&#8217;s prosecution of its former president, Trump ally Jair Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down \u200bthose duties in February.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a statement, \u2060Greer said he launched the Section 301 investigation to tackle &#8220;longstanding and pervasive U.S. concerns with certain of Brazil&#8217;s trade policies and practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Despite recent engagement with Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva and his cabinet, Greer said the United States and Brazil &#8220;continue to have substantial differences in resolving issues identified in this investigation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED TARIFFS SET FOR JULY 6<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The trade agency invited comment on the \u2060proposed tariffs through July 1, with a public hearing set for July 6. It faces a July \u206015 deadline for taking &#8220;responsive action&#8221; in the Section 301 investigation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump used the same statute to impose sweeping tariffs on Chinese goods during his first term.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=209\">US Jury Finds Investor Andrew Left Guilty of Securities Fraud<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The USTR has several other open Section 301 investigations that are expected to lead to new duties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Among these are one covering excess industrial capacity in China and 15 other trading partners, as well as one into enforcement of forced labor bans in 60 countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The agency opened a new investigation on Friday into Vietnam&#8217;s intellectual property practices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Regarding its Brazil findings, the USTR said the proposed new 25% tariff would not apply to Brazilian imports subject to national security-related tariffs under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>These include 50% \u2060duties on steel, aluminum and copper and 25% duties on finished products made from those metals, as well as a 25% duty on motor vehicles and auto parts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The USTR said products exempted from the proposed 25% tariffs included many fruits and nuts, crude oil and petroleum products, pharmaceutical compounds, organic chemicals and fertilizers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>These are in addition \u200bto beef, coffee, rare earths, certain other metals and ores and Brazilian aircraft and aircraft parts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>(Reporting \u200bby David Lawder; Editing by Thomas Derpinghaus and Clarence Fernandez)<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=207\">Trump Signs Proclamation Amending Tariffs on Steel, Aluminum and Copper Imports<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News is a recognized leader in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings.
