June 1 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump \u2060said \u2060on Monday that talks \u2060with Iran were ongoing, despite a report that \u200bTehran had suspended indirect negotiations with the United States to end \u200chostilities.<\/p>\n

“Talks are continuing, at \u200ca rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” \u2060Trump said \u2060in a Truth Social post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Iranian state news agency Tasnim \u200breported earlier that Tehran was halting indirect negotiations with the U.S. after Israel ordered troops to push deeper into Lebanon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In telephone interviews with \u200bnews outlets after that report, Trump said he had not \u2060been \u2060told that Iran was \u2060suspending \u200btalks with Washington.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“They haven’t informed us of that,” Trump said in an interview \u200bwith NBC News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Trump \u2060said that silence between the two sides would be fine and he was willing to wait.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I think we’ve been talking too much if you want to know the truth. I \u2060think going silent would be very good, and that could be \u2060for a long time,” he told NBC.<\/p>\n

A suspension in negotiations would not mean the U.S. would start bombing Iran, Trump told the network, adding that the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In a separate interview with CNBC, Trump had said he did not mind if the talks were over.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I don\u2019t care if \u2060they\u2019re over, honestly … I couldn\u2019t care less,” CNBC quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Shortly after those media interviews were reported, Trump issued his social media post saying talks with Iran were \u200bcontinuing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
