{"id":177,"date":"2026-06-01T12:44:44","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T12:44:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=177"},"modified":"2026-06-01T12:44:44","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T12:44:44","slug":"jj-prostate-cancer-drug-reduces-risk-of-cancer-spread-and-death-in-late-stage-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=177","title":{"rendered":"J&#038;J Prostate Cancer Drug Reduces Risk of Cancer Spread and Death in Late-Stage Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Sneha S K<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>May 31 (Reuters) &#8211; Johnson &amp; Johnson&#8217;s prostate cancer drug Erleada \u2060used \u2060with hormone-blocking therapy six months before and \u2060after prostate surgery improved the chances of eliminating the cancer and reduced the risk of \u200bdisease progression or death, according to data from a late-stage trial presented on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=175\">Trump to Headline 250th Anniversary Fair Opening After Performers Drop Out<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The study, which followed patients for over five years, found that \u200cthose who received the regimen were \u200cnine times more likely to have little to no detectable cancer in the prostate at the time of surgery compared with those \u2060given testosterone-blocking therapy \u2060alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The addition of Erleada also reduced the risk of the cancer spreading or death \u200bby 20%, the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The data, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, is likely to change how doctors approach treatment of men with high-risk localized or locally advanced prostate cancer. Currently, surgery to remove the prostate and radiation therapy are the standard of \u200bcare for such patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>About 40% of the 330,000 people diagnosed with prostate cancer in the U.S. are considered high-risk, J&amp;J \u2060said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The \u2060study also looked at a \u2060full year of treatment \u200bwith Erleada and hormone therapy before and after surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Among those patients, men who received the combination therapy on average went \u200bmore than six years before requiring \u2060subsequent treatment, nearly double the time for the hormone therapy alone group. The longer therapy with Erleada also reduced the risk of recurrence and death by 29%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Nearly half of patients who receive the current standard prostate-removal surgery and radiation see their cancer return and require additional treatment, J&amp;J said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8216;PARADIGM CHANGING&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Erleada, known chemically as apalutamide, belongs to a class of drugs called androgen receptor pathway inhibitors that block \u2060signals that drive prostate-cancer growth.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=173\">Experimental Novartis Radiopharma Drug Shows Promise in Early Study<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;No ARPIs are approved for localized high-risk prostate cancer with either surgery or \u2060radiation. So the (data) would be paradigm changing,&#8221; said Dr. Mary-Ellen Taplin, the study&#8217;s lead researcher from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The trial enrolled more than 2,000 patients with high-risk localized or locally advanced prostate cancer who were candidates for prostate gland removal surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>At the time of surgery, 8.9% of patients who received the combination treatment had little to no detectable cancer, compared with 1% of those receiving hormone therapy alone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The patient benefit here is unequivocal,&#8221; Mark Wildgust, J&amp;J&#8217;s medical affairs lead for oncology, said in an interview. &#8220;I think that the evidence is really showing that Erleada is adding something that we had not seen before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Widely used ARPIs include Pfizer&#8217;s Xtandi and Bayer&#8217;s Nubeqa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The safety profile \u2060of the Erleada combination treatment was consistent with previous studies, J&amp;J said.
