{"id":144,"date":"2026-05-29T06:48:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T06:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=144"},"modified":"2026-05-29T06:48:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T06:48:53","slug":"us-judge-tosses-trump-administrations-challenge-to-bostons-sanctuary-immigration-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=144","title":{"rendered":"US Judge Tosses Trump Administration&#8217;s Challenge to Boston&#8217;s &#8216;Sanctuary&#8217; Immigration Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By Nate Raymond<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>BOSTON, May 28 (Reuters) &#8211; A federal judge threw \u2060out \u2060a lawsuit that U.S. President \u2060Donald Trump&#8217;s administration filed challenging a Boston ordinance that restricts police cooperation \u200bwith federal immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=142\">Bessent Says He Had Breakfast With Fed\u2019s Warsh on Thursday<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Boston-based U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin ruled that the U.S. Department of Justice lacked legal \u200cgrounds to pursue the lawsuit, one \u200cof around a dozen it has filed challenging laws adopted by so-called &#8220;sanctuary jurisdictions&#8221; run by Democrats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The \u2060lawsuit was filed \u2060in September against the city and Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu and challenged \u200bthe Boston Trust Act, a law first adopted in 2014. The city council reaffirmed its support for the measure in December 2024 as Trump prepared to return to office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The law bars the Boston Police Department and other \u200bcity officials from collaborating with federal authorities including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to conduct \u2060civil \u2060immigration enforcement, including by keeping \u2060migrants for potential \u200bdeportation or sharing their personal information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Justice Department argued those provisions impeded federal immigration enforcement in \u200bviolation of the U.S. Constitution \u2060and were preempted by federal immigration law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But Sorokin, who was appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama, said the administration failed to demonstrate it had legal standing to challenge the measure and could not show any ruling in its favor would remedy the harms the federal government alleged it was suffering.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=140\">District Court Denies California Parks Department Bid to Stop Sable Offshore Pipeline<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He said \u2060that even if he blocked the city&#8217;s law, Boston police would still not be \u2060able to assist ICE in the way the Justice Department wanted due to a ruling handed down by Massachusetts&#8217; highest court in 2017 during Trump&#8217;s first term that barred law enforcement in the state from detaining non-citizens based solely on a federal civil immigration detainer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;In Massachusetts, there is simply no source of authority empowering Boston police officers to do what the United States would like them to do,&#8221; Sorokin wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>According to his ruling, the Justice Department has so far \u2060lost every similar case against cities and states with \u201csanctuary\u201d policies, with judges tossing four other lawsuits in Colorado, Illinois and New York.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s ruling is a victory for the rule of law and for local governments across the country,&#8221; Jill Habig, whose group the Public \u200bRights Project helped defend Boston against the lawsuit, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=138\">US Probes Reid Hoffman Group Over Funding Lawsuits Against Trump, Source Says<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>(Reporting by \u200bNate Raymond in Boston; Editing by Cynthia Osterman)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News is a recognized leader in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings.
