May 28 (Reuters) – CBS News named \u2060on \u2060Thursday investigative journalist, filmmaker \u2060and best-selling author Nick Bilton as executive \u200bproducer of prime time news magazine broadcast “60 Minutes,” marking the \u200cfirst time the show \u200chas tapped a leader from outside traditional television \u2060news.<\/p>\n

Bilton is \u2060the fifth executive producer in the show’s history. He \u200bis succeeding Tanya Simon, who became the program’s first female executive producer last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The appointment comes as CBS News \u200beditor-in-chief Bari Weiss pushes to reshape the newsroom with a \u2060stronger \u2060focus on streaming and \u2060digital \u200baudiences following Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of her outlet, The Free \u200bPress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Nick embodies the \u2060energy and ambition that animated the founders of the show. We cannot imagine a better fit,” Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski said in a note \u2060to staff.<\/p>\n

Bilton previously worked as a tech journalist and filmmaker \u2060with a strong investigative background. At the New York Times, he covered how technology reshaped business and society, and later contributed investigative and feature stories to Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His reporting led to investigations by the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice and Congress, according to CBS News.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Hiring Nick represents \u2060a deliberate vision for 60 Minutes to go beyond an hour on Sunday evenings to become a 360-degree product that reaches audiences wherever they consume information,” \u200bCibrowski said.<\/p>\n
