The Department of Justice can provide non-binding advice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Several aspects of the revised application&#8230; are unclear or underdeveloped and require supplementation at this stage,&#8221; the \u200bSTB said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The companies filed a revised application in April for their merger to \u2060create \u2060a coast-to-coast U.S. freight rail \u2060operator after \u200ban initial proposal was sent back in January.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A coalition of business groups, rival railroads \u200band organized labor unions \u2060have been opposed to the deal, arguing that it would stifle competition and raise costs for manufacturers, farmers and consumers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The board has now asked the railroad operators to submit additional information related to enhanced competition, market share projections and downstream merger impacts \u2060among others by July 27.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=109\">Tennis-Ailing Sinner Falls to Cerundolo in French Open Second-Round Shock<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Given the fairly narrow procedural question of completeness, \u2060issues raised by commenters do not warrant rejecting the revised application,&#8221; the board said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Once the companies provide the information, the STB will review the evidence over one year to determine whether the transaction serves the public interest, then issue a decision within three months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The companies had initially planned to close the merger by April next year, but this could be delayed as the board may not reach a decision until September 2027.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Union Pacific and \u2060Norfolk Southern did not immediately respond to Reuters&#8217; request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A delay is not likely to impact the likelihood of the deal going through, RBC analyst Walter Spracklin wrote, adding that he sees Thursday&#8217;s update as &#8220;neutral to \u200bsentiment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>(Reporting by Aishwarya Jain and Apratim Sarkar in Bengaluru; Additional reporting \u200bby Rashika Singh; Editing by Diti Pujara)<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/officemovingamerica.com\/?p=107\">Brazil\u2019s Lower House Approves Lula-Backed Proposal to Cut Work Week<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><b>Copyright 2026 Thomson Reuters<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US News is a recognized leader in college, grad school, hospital, mutual fund, and car rankings.
