NAIROBI, May 28 (Reuters) – Kenya has \u2060provided \u2060written approval for \u2060the U.S. to open a quarantine facility \u200bin the East African nation for Americans exposed to the \u200cEbola outbreak centred in \u200cthe Democratic Republic of Congo, two U.S. officials \u2060briefed \u2060on the response told Reuters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The authorisation grants the U.S. \u200baccess to land at an air force base in Laikipia in central Kenya, one of the officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Officials at \u200bKenya’s foreign and health ministries did not immediately respond \u2060to \u2060requests for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kenya had \u2060been \u200bpushing for the facility to be open to all nationalities, \u200bnot just \u2060U.S. citizens. It was not immediately clear if that would be the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The facility would be staffed by members of the U.S. Public Health Service, a \u2060uniformed branch of the Department of Health and Human Services.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In \u2060a statement on Wednesday, Kenya’s health ministry said it was in discussions with the U.S. and other global partners about cooperating on the response to Ebola but did not mention the plan for a quarantine facility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

One American doctor infected with Ebola and several other U.S. citizens exposed \u2060to the virus have been sent to Germany for treatment and monitoring. Another American doctor exposed to the virus was sent to Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
